Panthers recognized in Men's Lax, Women's Lax, Men's Track & Field
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Five Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized by the Little East Conference (LEC) for their performances over the last week.
Junior Zel Kerkel (Loudon, N.H.) was named LEC Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week; senior Clarissa Foote (Weare, N.H.) and junior Kimberly Zuccaro (Townsend, Mass.) were named LEC Women's Lacrosse Goalie and Defensive Players of the Week; and junior Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.) and freshman Terrell Lewis (Nashua, N.H.) were named LEC Men's Track & Field Track Athlete and Rookie Field Athlete of the Week, respectively.
Kerkel had a huge game in goal as the men's lacrosse team held on for a 10-9 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to remain undefeated (3-0) in LEC play on Saturday. He made a career-high 21 saves while posting an incredible 70.0% save percentage. He added nine saves in a 13-5 setback at New England College on Tuesday. Kerkel currently ranks second in the conference with 123 saves on the year and has logged nearly 650 minutes in goal for the Panthers. This is his second Goalie of the Week honor this spring.
Foote went 3-0 on the week to help extend the women's lacrosse team's winning streak to six straight games. She posted an 8.80 goals against average and a 56.0% save percentage while making 28 total saves. On Tuesday she made 12 saves as the Panthers nipped Bridgewater State University, 11-9. She made four saves in the first half of a 19-2 win over Salem State University on Thursday and ended the week with a 12-save effort in a 14-11 win over Eastern Connecticut State University in a rematch of last year's LEC title game. Foote leads the league with an 8-3 record, and is second in save percentage (51.5%) and goals against average (10.32). This is her first weekly honor.
Zuccaro stuffed the stat sheet, finishing the week with six goals, one assist, 14 ground balls, nine draw controls and six caused turnovers while finishing 4-of-4 in free position shots. She had a pair of free position goals, five ground balls and two caused turnovers in the win over Bridgewater State on Tuesday. On Thursday she added two goals and three draw controls against Salem State, then capped the week with two free position goals, seven ground balls, six draw controls and three caused turnovers in a key win over Eastern Connecticut. Zuccaro leads the LEC with 22 caused turnovers, is third with 39 ground balls and tenth with 37 draw controls. She's scored 11 goals and added three assists on the season. This is her first LEC weekly recognition.
Brunnette finished first in the 5,000 meter run at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College on Friday night, shattering a 40-year old school record in the process. He finished the race in 14:41.22, more than nine seconds ahead of the second place finisher and nearly five seconds faster than the previous school mark. It is currently the 18th fastest time in the country. He added a seventh place finish (1:06.76) in the 400 meter hurdles on Saturday at the Penmen Relays at Southern New Hampshire University, the first time he's competed in the event. This is the first weekly honor of the outdoor season for Brunnette.
Lewis was a double champion at the Penmen Relays on Saturday while setting two facility records in the process. He finished first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.39 seconds, 0.26 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. It was his second individual title in the 110 meter hurdles this spring. He also grabbed his first individual title in the high jump clearing 1.96 meters (6' 5.00"). He added a fifth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.42 meters (21' 0.75"). This is the first LEC recognition during the outdoor season for Lewis.
The men's lacrosse team hosts rival Keene State College on Wednesday (Apr. 18) for a 4:00 p.m. game. Women's lacrosse travels to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (Apr. 21) for an 11:00 a.m. contest, and the outdoor track and field teams head to Tufts University for the Sunshine Classic, also on Saturday (Apr. 21).
