Brunnette, Panthers' 4x800 relay team earn weekly recognition
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Sam Brunnette (Newport Center, Vt.) and the Plymouth State University men's outdoor track and field 4x800 meter relay team were both honored by the Little East Conference (LEC) today.
Brunnette was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while the 4x800 relay team of sophomore Noah Byington (Hanscomb AFB, Mass.), Brunnette, and juniors Kyle Saunders (Hudson, N.H.) and Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.) was recognized as the Men's Relay Team of the Week.
Brunnette was the first to finish the 3,000 meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in record-setting time. His 9:17.26 was nearly 12 seconds faster than the previous LEC and New England Alliance (NEA) record time of 9:29.10, set in 2002. It was also a school-record time, eclipsing his former mark by over nine seconds, and goes down as the 11th fastest time in the nation.
Brunnette also had a hand in the Panthers winning the 4x800 relay. The quartet's time of 7:55.40 set new LEC, NEA and Plymouth State records, clearing the existing LEC/NEA mark by just shy of five seconds. Bartlett was especially impressive down the stretch as he held off a pair of individual 800 meter national qualifiers to secure the team's win.
A number of Panthers have reached the necessary qualifying standards and will compete at this weekend's New England DIII Championships hosted by MIT. Events will take place on both Friday and Saturday.
