Physical Education Center (PE Center)

The Physical Education Center (PE Center) is the primary facility for the PSU Athletic Department. Opened in 1969, the building includes department offices; a 1,600 seat gymnasium; a six-lane, 25-yard swimming pool; a wrestling room; The Vailas Performance Center fitness facility; the Athletic Training and rehabilitation facility and also serves as the home of the Health and Human Enrichment cluster. The PE Center is surrounded by over 33 acres of athletic fields and an additional 12 acres used by the Intramural/Recreation Department.

Anyone using the PE Center facilities must have a current student or faculty/staff ID or a valid pool pass.

Community members must purchase a pool pass to use the pool during scheduled Open Community Swim sessions.

Pool Pass Information:

  • Individuals must be 19 years or older to purchase a pass. 
  • No guests are permitted without a pass - all users must have a current PSU ID or pool pass.
  • The pool pass allows access to the pool and locker room facilities only.
  • Pool passes cost: 
    • $35 for one month from date of purchase  
    • $20 for two weeks (14 days) from date of purchase 
    • $10 per day, pass valid for date of purchase only


PE Center Guidelines:

  • Dependent children between the ages of 3 and 18 are allowed to use the swimming pool, but must be accompanied by a parent who has a valid PSU ID or pool pass. 
  • Please no diapers (including swim diapers) in the pool.  
  • No guests are allowed to accompany pass holders or those with a valid PSU ID. This includes friends of children. All guests must also purchase a pool pass.
  • You must have your valid PSU ID or pool pass with you at all times, including on the pool deck, and present it to any staff member upon request. 
  • PE Center facilities other than the pool are for the exclusive use of current PSU students, faculty and staff only.

  • Do spouses of PSU faculty and staff need to purchase a pool pass?
    • No, but they must come to the main office to get a complimentary pool pass each year.
  • Do PSU Alumni need to purchase a pass?
    • Yes.
  • Does PSU offer swim lessons?
    • No, PSU does not offer lessons for youth or adults.
  • Is the pool available for individual lessons with a hired instructor?
    • No, individual swim lessons with a hired instructor are not to be conducted during open swim hours.
  • Can our group use the pool?
    • Groups looking to use the pool should contact the PSU Events Office for scheduling. They will do their best to accommodate your request.
  • Are there any community swim programs?
    • A Seniors' Community Aquatic Program is available. Contact Linda Fischer ( for more information.
  • What happens if PSU is closed?
    • Whenever the University is closed - for holiday, delayed opening or cancellation of classes due to inclement weather or an emergency - the PE Center (including the pool) will also be closed.
