PLYMOUTH, N.H. - After taking time off for final exams and the holidays, the Plymouth State University athletic teams will be back in action in early January 2010 with an assortment of in-season tournaments and numerous home events.
Highlighting the tournament action is the Panther men's basketball team's New Year's trip to West Palm Beach, Fla., for the Chuck Daly Memorial Classic at Northwood University on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 1-2, 2010. PSU will face Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and Northwood (Fla.), a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school whose men's basketball coach is the legendary Rollie Massamino, former Division I national championship coach at Villanova University.
The PSU women's basketball, women's ice hockey and wrestling teams will also be competing in tournament action in early January. The women's basketball team will face Regis College and the University of Maine Presque Isle at the University of Southern Maine New Year's Classic on Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 2-3, while the women's ice hockey team will battle Chatham University (Pa.) and Saint Michael's College in the Saint Michael's Holiday Classic the same two days in South Burlington, Vt. The Panther wrestlers will compete in the Williams College Invitational on Tuesday, Jan. 5, as PSU head coach Tommy Prairie makes his first coaching appearance at his alma mater.
Two other Panther teams begin January with a string of home events. The men's ice hockey team begins a five-game home stand on Saturday, Jan. 2, hosting the University of New England at 6:00 p.m. at Waterville Valley Arena, and the women's swimming and diving team opens the month with four consecutive home meets at the PSU Natatorium, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 1:00 p.m. against Bentley College.
