WSOC: Tuohy’s stunner leads Panthers over VTSU Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. – Sophomore Clare Tuohy (Sunapee, N.H.) blasted a left-footed screamer from the edge of the box in the second half to help Plymouth State University remain unbeaten on the year with a 3-1 win over Vermont State University Johnson in non-conference women's soccer action at Minaert Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Piper Sullivan (Laconia, N.H.) gave PSU a first-half lead on a volley off a corner kick, but the Badgers pulled even with a well-placed shot from distance in the 52nd minute. Tuohy answered less than five minutes later, rifling a blast from the right edge of the box to the far corner and the Panthers added an insurance goal from sophomore Clara Wilson (Montpelier, Vt.) to seal the win.

Plymouth State improves to 3-0-0, while the Badgers slip to 1-3-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, VTSU Johnson 1
    • Plymouth State (3-0-0)
    • VTSU Johnson (1-3-0)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State took an early lead in the 13th minute. Sophomore Islah Godo (Topsham, Maine) delivered a corner kick that got over the goalkeeper's head and Sullivan was on the back post to volley it in for a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Badgers had a chance to pull even four minutes later when a header led to an open shot from the top of the box. Freshman goalie Gabby Morell (Landenberg, Pa.) dove to her left, where the ball deflected off the right post and she recovered in time to deny a follow-up attempt.
  • Play went back-and-forth through the remainder of the half. The PSU defense smothered a couple Johnson opportunities and Morell came out to break up a chance in the closing minutes as the Panthers carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • The Badgers equalized in the 52nd minute on a shot from 25 yards out to the bottom right corner.
  • Tuohy restored the Panthers' lead less than five minutes later on a brilliant left-footed blast from the right edge of the box that found the far corner.
  • Godo nearly doubled the lead with two close-range strikes in the 72nd minute but Johnson's goalie was able to make a pair of incredible saves.
  • The Panthers added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Wilson deflected in another Godo corner to account for the final margin.
By the Numbers:
  • Sullivan's tally was her second of the young season.
  • Tuohy and Wilson each scored their first goals of the year.
  • Godo registered two assists.
  • Morell made two saves in the first half, while freshman Liv Desruisseaux (Dracut, Mass.) made two stops in the second half.
  • Plymouth State had a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • PSU leads the series, 5-1-0. This was the first meeting since the 2014 season.
