Three Panthers on All-LEC Baseball Team

PLYMOUTH, NH - Three members of the Plymouth State College baseball team earned Honorable Mention on the 1998 Little East Conference All-Star Team.

Panther representatives receiving honorable mention include senior outfielder Mark Thompson (Manchester, NH), junior designated hitter Mike Bence (Warwick, RI), and junior pitcher Ben DuBois (Franklin, NH).

Mark Thompson wrapped up a superb Panther career in '98, leading the team in batting average (.382), hits (55) and doubles (14) and ranking among the conference leaders in all three categories. A starter at four positions this spring (LF, CF, RF & C), Thompson also set more than a half-dozen school records in his career, including most hits (183), doubles (45) and RBI (130). He set a PSC standard with a 14-game hitting streak last month.

Mike Bence emerged into a solid power hitter for PSC this season, batting .352 with five doubles, three home runs and 26 RBI. The left-handed hitting Bence was second on the team in walks (22) and fourth in run scored (31), usually hitting in the fifth spot in the Panther order. He also saw action in seven games on the mound, including two starts, logging 16 and two-thirds innings.

Ben DuBois earned All-Conference honors as a pitcher, although the junior was also a valuable hitter and first baseman. DuBois led the Little East in earned run average (2.75), posting a 4-3 record and striking out 51 batters in 68 and two-thirds innings. He was also selected to the LEC All-Tournament Team after a complete-game masterpiece victory over UMass Dartmouth in PSC's opener. DuBois also batted .290 this spring in 107 at bats, contributing five doubles and ranking second on the team in home runs (4) and RBI (27).

These three Panthers helped lead Plymouth State to a 20-19 overall record, and a fourth place in the Little East Conference regular season finish. PSC qualified for the Little East Conference Tournament, its ninth post-season appearance in 14 years under coach Dennis McManus.
