PSC Splits LEC Pair With UMass Dartmouth
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College's baseball team knocked out 19 hits and scored 14 runs in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, splitting a Little East Conference twinbill with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at Panther Field.
The Corsairs captured the opener, 3-2, scoring a run in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie. PSC rebounded to capture the nightcap 14-9, scoring six runs in the seventh to break open the slugfest.
The win for PSC improves the Panthers to 1-3 in the LEC and 7-9-1 overall, while UMD goes to 3-1 in LEC games and 8-9-1 overall.
UMD took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game as Brian Ronayne (Bridgewater, MA) produced a two-RBI double off PSC starter Ben DuBois (Franklin, NH). DuBois evened the score in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run double of his own, knotting the score at 2-2. Jeff Cross (Holden, MA) singled, stole second and scored on an infield error for the game-winning run for UMD in the seventh inning.
Sophomore Tim Troup (Halifax, MA) allowed six hits and two runs in eight innings for UMD to pick up his first win of the year, with Jason Hinchliffe (New Bedford, MA) coming on to post his second save. DuBois, who surrendered seven hits and three unearned runs, struck out 10 and went the distance but took the loss (2-2).
Senior Todd Steffanides (Fitchburg, MA) led the Panther offensive attack in the nightcap, going 5-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI. DuBois, Seth Whitworth (Orford, NH) and Dakota Smith (Rochester, NH) all added three hits, with Whitworth knocking in two runs. Freshmen Chris Mann (Leominster, MA) pitched five-and-a-third innings of four-hit, one-run relief to register his second win (2-0).
Senior Eli Munkholm (Salem, MA) cracked his third home run of the season for UMD in the nightcap and knocked in four runs. Munkholm, Brian Pereira (New Bedford, MA) and Chris McLain (North Adams, MA) all had three hits for the Corsairs.
PSC returns to Panther Field Sunday (Apr. 11) with one non-conference game against Bowdoin (1:00 p.m.). UMD returns home Sunday (Apr. 11) to host Brandeis (1:00 p.m.).
