PLYMOUTH, NH -- A pair of Plymouth State College baseball pitchers have been honored by the Little East Conference for their efforts in last weekend's doubleheader sweep over Rhode Island College.
Senior ace Ben DuBois (Franklin, NH) was selected LEC Pitcher of the Week, the second time in his career he has collected the honor, and freshman Jeff Morgan (Laconia, NH) was named LEC Rookie of the Week. The two tossed complete-game gems on Saturday to give the Panthers the LEC twinbill over the Anchormen.
A pitcher/first baseman, DuBois was outstanding against RIC, allowing just six hits and two walks and recording his first shutout of the season, 5-0. He struck out four, improved his season totals to 3-2, a team-leading 1.18 ERA and 32 strikeouts. The righthander now ranks among the LEC leaders in ERA, wins, and strikeouts (7.58 per 9 innings).
A rookie righthander, Morgan pitched his second complete game of the season, giving up just seven hits and two walks for a 7-4 win over RIC. Just one of the four runs allowed was earned, as the freshman matched DuBois for the team lead in wins (3). Morgan struck out four and is second on the team with 24 Ks this spring.
PSC, 11-11-1 overall and in fourth place in the LEC at 3-3, plays a pair of non-conference games this week, Tuesday (Apr. 20) at Bridgewater State (3:00 p.m.) and Wednesday (Apr. 21) at Dartmouth (3:00 p.m.), before heading to Western Connecticut Saturday (Apr. 24) for a Little East Conference doubleheader (12:00 p.m.).
PANTHER NOTES: PSC has two of the top hitters in the LEC in seniors Mike Bence (Warwick, RI) and Todd Steffanides (Fitchburg, MA). Bence, a RF/DH, is batting .420 with eight doubles among his 34 hits, while Steffanides, the starting SS and lead-off hitter, checks in with a .391 average, a .476 on-base percentage, 34 hits, eight doubles, 23 runs scored, and 12 stolen bases.
