PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Four Plymouth State College pitchers limited a potent Salem State College baseball line-up to three runs Wednesday, giving PSC a 5-3 non-conference victory over the Vikings at Panther Field.
Salem State, which is ranked eighth in New England and was batting .372 as a team, dropped to 25-7 overall, while PSC wins its third straight game to move above .500 at 14-13-1.
Freshman starter Jon Albertini (Franklin, MA) worked the first four-plus innings for PSC, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five. Classmate Nate Provencher (Wilton, NH) came on for the next three innings, giving up two hits and a run and striking out three to earn the victory (3-2). A third freshman, Jeff Morgan (Laconia, NH) worked the eighth inning for PSC, surrendering two hits and a run, and senior Ben DuBois (Franklin, NH) retired the side in order in the ninth, including a pair of strikeouts, to register his first save.
The Panthers never trailed in the game, getting three runs in the first inning. Senior Todd Steffanides (Fitchburg, MA) and sophomore Dakota Smith (Rochester, NH) cracked doubles, and Corey Mastin (Newmarket, NH) and DuBois each had RBI singles in the inning.
Salem State got its first run in the top of the second when Joe Barteaux (Lynn, MA) tripled and scored on a Keith Gonyea (Auburn, MA) RBI single.
PSC added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Mastin doubled in the sixth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Don Jennings (Bradford, VT), and Jim Freda (Windham, NH) singled in the seventh and scored on Mastin's RBI single.
The Vikings got two runs back in the top of the eighth. Dom Nicastro (Gloucester, MA) drove in a run and another scored on a passed ball. But Morgan worked out of bases-loaded jam, and DuBois shut the door in the ninth.
PSC plays another non-conference home game Thursday (Apr. 29) at Panther Field against Franklin Pierce (3:30 p.m.).
