PSC Baseball splits twinbill to move to 4-4
FORT MYERS, Florida - Sophomore right-hander Jeff Morgan (Laconia, NH) tossed his first career shutout Thursday, leading Plymouth State College's baseball team to a 4-0 victory over Hope College (Mich.) in the opening game of a doubleheader in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
Hope came back to earn a split with an 8-5 victory in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the win. PSC is now 4-4 overall on the Florida trip, while Hope is now 5-6.
Morgan allowed only six hits in seven innings to improve his record to 2-0. Morgan shared the team lead with six victories last season. Freshman 2B Phil Pagan (Nashua, NH) was the offensive star for PSC, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and three runs scored.
Hope's four-run seventh inning in the nightcap made a loser out of freshman Jon Rich (Londonderry, NH). Classmate Matt Tupman (Concord, NH) had three of PSC's four hits.
PSC concludes the Florida trip with a single game Friday against Middlebury (9 a.m.). The first game back in New England is the scheduled home opener for PSC next Wednesday (Mar. 29) at Panther Field against Saint Anselm (3:30 p.m.).
