St. Michael's trips PSC Baseball in home opener
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Saint Michael's College scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday and went on to register a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Plymouth State College in non-conference baseball action at Panther Field.
The outcome spoiled a strong pitching performance by PSC right-hander Corey Mastin (Newmarket, NH). Mastin had allowed just one run on five hits through the first eight innings, but SMC scored four runs on four hits in the ninth, including a solo home run by John Miarecki (Enfield, Conn.). Seth Cole (Blue Hill, Maine) drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, and Dan Doherty (Billerica, Mass.) knocked in two with a double.
The Purple Knights got their own solid pitching performance from junior Matt Reidy (Melrose, Mass.), who earned the complete game victory to improve to 2-0. He allowed 10 hits and two walks, but struck out four and allowed only single runs in the first, second and ninth innings.
All 10 Panther hits came from different players. Senior Josh Egan (Sharon, Mass.) cracked his first home run of the season in the first inning over the right field fence. The Panthers put together a small rally in the ninth when freshmen Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, NH) and Phil Pagan (Nashua, NH) had back-to-back pinch-hit doubles, but Reidy got Francy Alcantara (Lawrence, Mass.) to ground out to end the game.
PSC, 7-7, plays a non-conference game Friday at Endicott (3:30 p.m.), and is scheduled to host Eastern Connecticut Saturday in a Little East Conference twinbill at Panther Field (12 p.m.). St. Michael's, 6-0, returns home to host Middlebury Sunday in a doubleheader (12 p.m.).
