PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Josh Egan (Sharon, Mass.) provided the key hitting and sophomore Jeff Morgan (Laconia, NH) the pitching Monday as Plymouth State College defeated Colby-Sawyer College, 5-3, in non-conference baseball action at Panther Field.
Egan broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning with a two-run home run to right field, his third of the season, in what proved to be the game-winning hit. Morgan registered his third complete game of the campaign, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He also walked five and hit two batters, but struck out 11 to improve his record to 4-1.
Colby-Sawyer took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Garrett Chambers singled and junior Scott Lavigne followed with a two-run homer. Then George Sylvester reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a passed ball to put the Chargers up by three.
PSC countered with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Egan walked and Corey Mastin (Newmarket, NH) singled to open the frame. Freshman Jason Wood (Dover, NH) singled in Egan, and Mastin crossed the plate on an infield error. Wood then scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Silva (Berlin, Conn.) to tie the game at 3-3 and set up Egan's heroics.
The win pulls the Panthers back to within a game of the .500 mark at 11-12-1 overall, while the Chargers dip to 16-15. PSC returns to action with a non-conference game Thursday (4/27) at Salem State (3:30 p.m.). Colby-Sawyer opens the Commonwealth Coast Conference on Wednesday (4/26).
