LEC Weekly Honor for PSC Baseball Freshman

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - One of the top freshmen on the Plymouth State College baseball team has been honored by the Little East Conference for his performance in PSC's 5-0 streak during the last week of April.

Freshman Jay Zinis (Manchester, NH-West) was selected LEC Rookie of the Week, the first LEC Weekly honor for any Panther this season. He was instrumental in PSC taking a single game from Colby-Sawyer last Monday and sweeping doubleheaders over the weekend from UMass Boston and Lyndon State.

A 5'11", 192-pound outfielder, Zinis batted .500 in the five games, going 9-for-18 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, two walks, nine RBI and 10 runs scored. He hit safely in all five games to stretch his hitting streak to eight games and improve his batting average to .342.

The Panthers' 5-0 week has improved them to 15-12-1 overall and 3-5 in the LEC (sixth place). The top six teams in the LEC make next week's conference tournament, and PSC has a tough week ahead. After a single game Tuesday (5/2) at Keene State, the Panthers return home Wednesday (5/3) for the rematch against the Owls. Then PSC entertains Southern Maine for a pair Saturday (5/6) and Western Connecticut Sunday (5/7) at Panther Field for a make-up doubleheader.

PANTHER NOTES: Freshman C Matt Tupman (Concord, NH) and 3B Phil Pagan (Nashua, NH) continue their outstanding rookie campaigns for PSC. Sophomore Jeff Morgan (Laconia, NH) earned two complete-game victories last week, and ranks as one of the top pitchers in the LEC. He is now 5-1 on the season with a 2.21 earned run average. He is ranked second in the LEC in ERA and tied for first in wins and winning percentage.
