Panthers split with Elmhurst

FORT MYERS, Florida - Plymouth State College's baseball team pounded out 12 hits and junior Jeff Morgan (Laconia, N.H.) earned a complete-game victory Thursday as the Panthers defeated Elmhurst College (Ill.) 9-4 in the first game of a doubleheader in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Elmhurst came back with a game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap to register a 6-3 triumph. The doubleheader split leaves PSC with a 1-5 mark on its spring trip, while Elmhurst is now 8-3.

Morgan (1-0) worked all seven innings in the opener, allowing seven hits and one earned run while striking out six. He was the ace of the Panther staff last season, going 6-2 with a 2.54 ERA.

Five different Panther batters recorded two hits apiece -- senior Dakota Smith (Rochester, N.H.) and sophomores Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.), Matt Price (Epping, N.H.), Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) and Sy Tebbetts (Hollis, N.H.). Hodsdon had a triple and two RBIs, and Price smacked a pair of doubles and drove in a run.

Junior Kevin Locke (Pike, N.H.) worked the first six innings of the nightcap for PSC, allowing five hits and three runs. Senior Brian Neff (Salinas, Cal.) came on for the seventh inning and surrendered the game-winning blast by Mike Matyasik to suffer the loss.

Plymouth State is scheduled for three games on Friday (Mar. 23). PSC will battle Trinity College (Conn.) in regularly scheduled games at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., followed by a make-up game against Roger Williams University at 7 p.m.
