Panthers bomb Salem State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) hit for the cycle Wednesday to lead a 19-hit attack for Plymouth State College as the Panthers defeated Salem State College in a non-conference baseball game at Panther Field.

The victory improves PSC to 5-17 overall, while the Vikings drop to 13-14.

Salokangas had an RBI double in the second inning and a single in the third as PSC built an 11-0 lead through four innings. He added a solo home run in the sixth, his third of the season, and completed the cycle with a two-run triple to right in the eighth. He finished the day with four runs scored and four knocked in.

Senior Dakota Smith (Rochester, N.H.), sophomore Rob Burr (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Brandon Stocker (Sunapee, N.H.) also registered three hits apiece for PSC. Smith had a double and two RBI, and Stocker scored three times and drove in three. Sophomore Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H.) also cracked his second home run of the season for the Panthers.

Sophomores Nate Bertolino (Gloucester, Mass.) and Mike Cornacchini (Swampscott, Mass.) had two hits apiece to lead the Vikings. Cornacchini had a two-run double in the eighth inning, and senior Jim Tracy (Lynn, Mass.) added a solo home run in the ninth.

Sophomore starter Jonathan Rich (Londonderry, N.H.) worked into the eighth inning to pick up his first win (1-1) of the season. Senior Arlan Freeman (Portland, Maine) got the final five outs for PSC. Junior Ben Decker (Tolland, Conn.) started and took the loss for the Vikings.

PSC is at home again Thursday (Apr. 26), hosting New England College in a make-up game (3:00 p.m.). The game will mark the return of NEC head coach Dave Anderson, a PSC graduate who served the last 14 seasons as a Panther assistant coach.
