PLYMOUTH, N.H. - A sophomore outfielder on the Plymouth State College baseball team has received one of the top weekly honors from the Little East Conference.
Sophomore Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) was named LEC Co-Player of the Week for his performance in eight games last week. He is the first Panther to receive any weekly honors from the LEC this season, sharing the award with University of Southern Maine sophomore outfielder Tyler Delorme.
A 5'11", 190-pound left-handed hitter, Salokangas hit safely in seven straight games last week. He extended his hitting streak to 15 games before going 0-for-2 with a walk in Sunday's second game against Castleton State. For the week, Salokangas batted .529 (18-for-34) with two doubles, three triples, a home run, nine RBI and 16 runs scored. He had two 4-hit games and two 3-hit games, and he hit for the cycle in the Panthers' win over Salem State.
Salokangas helped PSC go 6-2 on the week to improve its record to 10-18 overall. The Panthers conclude the regular season this week with four mid-week non-conference road contests (single games at Dartmouth and Colby-Sawyer sandwiched around a doubleheader at Lyndon State) before returning home for Saturday's LEC twinbill against UMass Boston (12 p.m.). The outcome of Saturday's games will determine PSC's conference play-off fate.
