PSC Baseball takes two from Lyndon State

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - The Plymouth State College baseball team needed extra innings to take the opener, but coasted in the nightcap Wednesday en route to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Lyndon State College in a pair of scheduled seven-inning games.

The Panthers scored three times in the top of the eighth to pull out an 8-5 victory in the first game, then plated eight runs in the second inning of the second game and won by a 12-1 margin. The nightcap was stopped after five innings.

Plymouth State has now won 10 of its last 14 games to improve to 12-19 overall, while the Hornets drop to 5-23.

The PSC bats pounded out 13 hits in the opener, including two each from junior Jon Albertini (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomores Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.), Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) and Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H.). The Panthers rallied for the win in the eighth on a walk by Albertini, back-to-back hits by Hodsdon and senior Dakota Smith (Rochester, N.H.) and a sacrifice fly by Price.

Sophomore Jason Egan (Sharon, Mass.) worked four effective innings of relief, but the victory went to junior Kevin Locke (Pike, N.H.), who pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Senior Arlan Freeman (Portland, Maine) retired all thee batters in the bottom of the eighth for his first save.

Zinis cracked a grand slam and sophomore Rob Burr (Concord, N.H.) added a two-run blast to highlight PSC's eight-run second inning of the nightcap. Smith, Price and Zinis added consecutive RBI hits in the fifth to put the game away. Freshman Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.) earned the complete-game win (2-1), allowing one run on three hits in five innings, striking out two.

The Panthers get right back into action Thursday (May 3) with a non-conference game at Colby-Sawyer (3:00 p.m.). PSC wraps up the regular season Saturday (May 5) at Panther Field with a Little East Conference doubleheader against UMass Boston (12:00 p.m.)
