Keene State nips PSC on HR in 9th

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Kelly Charbono (Enfield, N.H.) hit his second home run of the season in the ninth inning Tuesday, breaking an 8-8 tie and leading Keene State College to a 9-8 victory over Plymouth State College in a Little East Conference baseball game played at Rhode Island College.

The game was scheduled to be played at PSC, but was moved to RIC because of the snow that covers Panther Field.

Charbono's blast, a solo shot with one out in the ninth off PSC junior Kevin Locke (Pike, N.H.), made a winner out of KSC reliever Ben Tyer (Lee, Mass.). Tyer (2-0) came on in the sixth inning in relief of starter Andrew Cuthbertson (LaFargeville, N.Y.). Sophomore Corey Hartson (Merrimack, N.H.) worked the ninth inning for the Owls to earn his second save. Locke, who pitched the complete game for PSC, drops to 0-3.

All nine Plymouth State starters had at least one hit as PSC battered Owl pitchers for 17 hits, but the Panthers stranded 10 runners on base. Junior Jon Albertini (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomore Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.) each had four hits for PSC, Albertini going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored and Hodsdon going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Travis Muckle (Bennington, Vt.) went 3-for-4 for the Owls with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Keith Jacobson (Colchester, Conn.) added two hits and an RBI in the winning effort.

PSC, 2-13 overall and 1-4 in the LEC, is scheduled to play again Saturday at Southern Maine, but the games will likely be changed due to snow on USM's field. KSC, 6-5 overall and 3-0 in LEC play, is scheduled to host Salem State on Thursday (3 p.m.)
