PSC drops LEC opener at UMD

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Plymouth State College opened its Little East Conference baseball schedule Saturday with a pair of losses at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the first in extra innings and the second by 13 runs.

The Corsairs scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning in the opener to tie the game, and then tallied the game-winner in the bottom of the 10th to pull out a 4-3 victory. UMD then pounded out 17 hits off six Panther pitchers to capture a 16-3 decision in the nightcap. UMD, picked third in the LEC preseason poll, improves to 7-8 overall while PSC, picked fifth in the preseason poll, drops to 3-9.

Mike Rahme's home run in the ninth inning for the Corsairs sent the opener into extra frames, and Jason Orlando's single in the 10th won it for the Corsairs. Senior Jeff Morgan (Laconia, N.H.) took the loss for PSC in relief of starter Nate Provencher (Wilton, N.H.), who worked into the ninth inning.

Plymouth State had scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 3-2 lead. Senior Jon Albertini (Franklin, Mass.) started the rally with a single, and was followed a double by Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.) and consecutive singles by juniors Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) and Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West). But a potentially bigger rally ended when PSC left three runners on base in the inning.

UMD scored twice in each of the first two innings of the nightcap, then added three more in the third inning and put the game away with five runs in the fourth. Geoff Nettleton led the Corsairs with four hits and four RBI, including a home run. Sophomore Jay Morgan (Laconia, N.H.) hit his first home run of the season for PSC in the losing effort.

PSC's game against Lyndon State scheduled for Monday (Apr. 2) has been moved to May 1st at Lyndon State as part of a doubleheader. The Panthers' next game is Wednesday (Apr. 3) at Becker College in Leicester, Mass. (3:30 p.m.).
