Burke leads PSC past Becker
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Junior Owen Burke (Sanbornton, N.H./Winnisquam) pitched a complete game to earn his first career victory Wednesday as Plymouth State College defeated Becker College, 5-2, in a rain-shortened non-conference baseball game.
The contest was played at Trinity High School due to unplayable field conditions at either of the colleges. Umpires called the game after five innings due to rain and a sloppy field.
Burke, a lefthander making his 12th career start, allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out four. Both of the runs scored were unearned as Burke evened his record at 1-1 on the season.
The Panthers scored once in the first and third innings, sandwiched around a three-run second inning. Junior Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) brought home a run in the opening frame with a sacrifice fly. Freshmen Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) and Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) contributed back-to-back RBI doubles in the second inning, followed by a run-scoring single from junior Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.). Junior Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West) scored PSC's final run on an infield grounder.
PSC, 4-9 overall, returns home for a tough Little East Conference doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut on Saturday (Apr. 6) at Panther Park (12:00 p.m.). The Warriors are defending LEC Tournament champions and pre-season co-favorites who are currently ranked No. 1 in New England.
