Late rally gives Dartmouth win over PSC

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Ninth inning RBI hits by senior Derek Draper (Patterson, Cal.) and junior Josh Cushman (Augusta, Maine) lifted Dartmouth College to a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over upset-minded Plymouth State College Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference Granite State baseball game at Panther Park.

The Panthers, who led 5-1 after three innings and 6-5 heading into the ninth, nearly pulled it out in the bottom of the ninth inning. PSC loaded the bases with two outs, but senior John Velosky (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) came on to close out the game and earn his first save.

The win improves the Big Green to 12-14 overall, while the Panthers drop to 10-14-1.

After Dartmouth broke out on top in the third inning on an RBI double by sophomore Scott Shirrell (Portland, Maine), Plymouth State answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Jon Albertini (Franklin, Mass.) drove in the first run with an RBI single, and junior Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.) brought home four more with a grand slam to right field, his sixth homer of the year.

Dartmouth chipped away at the lead as PSC paraded six different pitchers to the mound. Freshman Brian Zurhellen (Plancentia, Cal.) hit his second home run of the season in the fourth inning, and Shirrell and sophomore Ed Lucas (Deltona, Fla.) each knocked in a run in the fifth. The Big Green tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning on Lucas' RBI single.

Plymouth State regained the lead in the last of the eighth on a solo home run by junior Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.), his sixth of the season, but Dartmouth pulled out the game in the ninth. Brian Gattis picked up the win with a scoreless inning in relief for Dartmouth, improving his record to 2-1. David Lopez also pitched well out of the bullpen for the Big Green prior to Gattis, allowing only two hits and one run in four-and-two-thirds innings.

PSC is home again Thursday afternoon with a non-conference game against St. Joseph's College (Maine), beginning at 3 p.m. Dartmouth plays an Ivy League series this weekend at Brown
