FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State College baseball team made a solid debut to the 2003 season Sunday evening by sweeping a doubleheader from Roger Williams University, 11-9 and 9-2, in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
PSC rallied from an 8-3 deficit in the opener, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead. After Roger Williams tied the score in the bottom of the inning, PSC added two more runs in the top of the eighth to pull out the 11-9 victory.
Seniors Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.) and Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West) smacked two home runs apiece for PSC. Burr's homers included a grand slam during the seventh-inning comeback. Senior Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) also hit a game-tying two-run homer for PSC in the critical seventh-inning rally
Freshman Mike Dreesen (Boxford, Mass.) picked up the win for PSC on the mound, and senior Jon Rich (Londonderry, N.H.) finished it out to earn the save.
The Panthers scored at least one run in each of the first six innings of the nightcap. PSC took a 4-0 lead after three innings and added one in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth to put the game away. Senior Owen Burke (Sanbornton, N.H.) registered the win on the mound for the Panthers, allowing one run on five hits in five innings while striking out five.
Burr pounded out four hits in the nightcap, including a double, while Salokangas added his second home run. Senior Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.) also contributed a pair of hits. PSC continues action in Florida Monday evening with a doubleheader against Framingham State.
