PSC sweeps pair from NEC

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State College baseball team pounded out 24 hits and scored 27 runs Wednesday en route to a doubleheader sweep of New England College in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, 10-3 and 17-5.

The Panther offense is also noteworthy because both teams used only wooden bats in the game. NEC had eight runs and 13 hits in the two seven-inning games.

Plymouth State trailed 3-0 in the fourth inning of the opener, but scored four runs in the fourth and added six more an inning later to put the game away. Junior Mike Bradbury (Chatham, Mass.) earned his first victory of the season for PSC out of the Panther bullpen. Senior Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) had two doubles to lead the offense, and freshman Tim Mounsey (Concord, N.H.) added a pair of hits.

NEC led the nightcap 4-3 after two innings, but the Panther bats came alive with four runs in the third, one in the fourth, and a half dozen in the fifth. They added three more runs in the seventh inning for good measure.

Senior Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) led the way for PSC with three hits, including a homer, while junior Nick Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) and sophomore Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) also had three hits. Freshman Scott Begalle (Rumney, N.H.) chipped in with a single and a double, and senior Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West) had two hits. Freshman Gaylon Lucas (Woodsville, N.H.) earned the win in relief for PSC, his first career decision.

PSC, 4-2, continues action in Florida Thursday with a doubleheader against Trinity College.
