NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Junior pitcher Matt Smith (Franklin, N.H.) helped the Colby-Sawyer College baseball team snap a six-game losing streak Thursday, allowing one run over eight innings in a 6-1 home win over Plymouth State College at the Kelsey Athletic Fields.
Smith (1-1) struck out six Panthers and scattered 10 singles before he was relieved by junior Chris Lane (Ipswich, Mass.) who threw a scoreless ninth.
Sophomore Tom Dressler (Winthrop, Maine) came off the bench to go 2-for-3 for the Chargers (7-12), while teammate Joel Ashton (Sturbridge, Mass.) was also 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Junior Jon Clay (Hopkinton, N.H.) went 2-for-4 and drove in one run in the victory.
PSC sophomore Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) had a 3-for-4 afternoon, and seniors Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.), Michael Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) and Sy Tebbetts (Hollis, N.H.) each collected two hits for the Panthers (9-11), who stranded 13 runners.
Colby-Sawyer took the early 1-0 lead when freshman Mark McKinnon (Rumford, R.I.) led off the first with a base hit, stole second, and came around to score on a single by Clay. Plymouth knotted the game and scored its only run in the top of the second when Campo reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a hit by Tebbetts, moved to third on a Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) walk, and came home on Gabellieri's first single of the day.
The Chargers took the lead for good with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. Juniors Tyler Martin (Amherst, N.H.) and Joey Magnani (Ashland, Mass.) reached on infield fielding errors and scored on a passed ball and an Ashton sacrifice fly. Colby-Sawyer picked up some insurance by adding one run apiece in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames.
The Panthers return to Little East Conference action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Southern Maine.
