USM takes two from PSC

GORHAM, Maine - The University of Southern Maine swept a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from Plymouth State College Saturday afternoon at Towers Field, winning the opener 4-2 and taking the nightcap 14-4.

PSC trailed 3-2 in the eighth inning of the opener and had the bases loaded with one out, but USM got out of the jam with no harm done and added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to hold off the Panthers. The Huskies then scored 14 runs on 15 hits in game two, overcoming a 3-0 first-inning PSC lead to take a 9-3 advantage after four innings and coasting home with the win.

The outcome leaves Southern Maine, which has won nine straight, at 16-10 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while PSC, which has dropped five in a row, falls to 9-13 and 2-5.

PSC senior Owen Burke (Sanbornton, N.H.) allowed three runs in the first inning of the opener, but kept the Huskies off the board again until the eighth. He finished with a complete game effort, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) and striking out six, but took the loss to dip to 4-3.

The Panthers scored both their runs on sacrifice flies, one by senior Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.) in the first inning and one by junior Mike Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) in the fourth. Senior Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) and freshman Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) and C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) had two hits apiece for PSC.

Hodsdon cracked a two-run homer and senior Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) added a solo shot as PSC took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two. It was Hodsdon's first of the season and Price's fourth.

Senior Jon Rich (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior Mike Bradbury (Chatham, Mass.) couldn't hold the lead, though, pitching three innings each and combining to allow 14 runs on 15 hits. Sophomore Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.), Salokangas and senior Sy Tebbetts (Hollis, N.H.) had two hits apiece for PSC in the losing cause.

After seven postponements, PSC will finally play its home opener on Monday, a make-up twinbill against Becker College at Panther Park (2:00 p.m.).
