PSC sweeps pair from Becker
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - After seven postponements, the Plymouth State College baseball team finally played its first home games of the season Monday afternoon at Panther Park, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Becker College, 6-5 and 11-7.
PSC, which came from behind to pull out both wins, stopped its five-game losing streak and improved to 11-13 overall, while Becker fell to 7-12-1 overall.
Trailing 3-0 in the opener, the Panthers pulled out the game with a two-out, five-run rally in the fifth inning. Sophomore Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) doubled and scored on a single by senior Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.). After seniors Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) and Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) drew walks, classmate Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.) cracked a two-run double and freshman C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) followed with a two-run single.
The rally made a winner out of senior starter Jason Egan (Sharon, Mass.), who went five-plus innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Freshman Mike Dreesen (Boxford, Mass.) came on in the seventh inning and nailed down his first save.
Down 3-0 after a half-inning in the nightcap, PSC plated four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Hodsdon had an RBI double, and two runs came home on a triple by senior Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West). The Panthers added a solo run in the second on another RBI double from Hodsdon.
The Panthers then put the game away with a five-run fourth inning, keyed by a grand slam by senior Matt Price (Epping, N.H.), his team-leading fifth home run of the season. Junior Jay Morgan (Laconia, N.H.) added RBI doubles in the fourth and fifth innings.
Zinis came out of the bullpen to earn his first win of the season (1-0). He worked three-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit and two walks while striking out nine.
The Panthers are back in action Tuesday at Panther Park with a 3:00 p.m. game against New England College. Both teams will use only wooden bats in the game.
