Panthers outlast NEC

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - In a game that featured two teams using only wooden bats, Plymouth State College outlasted New England College Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game at Panther Park, 11-6.

The Panthers scored 11 runs on 10 hits to extend their modest winning streak to three games, improving to 12-13 overall. NEC, which lost twice to PSC earlier in the season, fell to 4-18.

Both teams had to overcome cold temperatures, wet field conditions and a steady rain that fell most of the game. The play got a little sloppy, and the two squads combined to commit 11 errors.

Senior Matt Price (Epping, N.H.), sophomore Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Tim Mounsey (Concord, N.H.) led the Panthers with two hits and an RBI apiece. Senior Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West) drove in a pair of runs, and classmate Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) collected PSC's only extra-base hit with a seventh-inning RBI double.

Junior Steve Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) picked up his first win (1-0) of the season for PSC, working five innings and giving up three runs on two hits. Freshman Mike Dreesen (Boxford, Mass.) and senior Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.) went the rest of the way on the mound for the Panthers.

Senior Drew Diko (Warwick, R.I.) led the Pilgrims, going 2-for-5 with a two-run double and an RBI single. Junior Kyle Holt (Sandwich, Mass.) pitched the first seven innings and took the loss (0-3).

The Panthers return to Little East Conference action Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. game at Keene State.
