PSC defeats Salem State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College used a six-run first inning and nine pitchers working one inning each Thursday to defeat Salem State College in a non-conference baseball game at Panthers Park, 11-2.

Sophomores Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) and Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) each delivered two-run singles in the first inning to help stake PSC to a 6-0 lead. Gabellieri added another RBI single in the fifth inning to finish the game with three RBI.

Junior Nick Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) and senior Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) also had run-scoring hits for PSC, and freshman Scott Begalle (Rumney, N.H.) collected two hits and scored two runs.

Junior Steve Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) began the parade of Panther pitchers, working one scoreless inning and by rule, earning the victory to improve to 1-1. Freshman Dustin Williams (Wells, Maine) started for the Vikings and took the loss (0-3).

Salem State managed only six hits off the nine Panther pitchers, but two were for extra bases. Freshman Todd Arruda (South Dartmouth, Mass.) doubled and came around to score in the third inning, and senior Steve Lorrain (Boothbay, Maine) cracked a solo home run in the seventh.

PSC, 14-16 overall, plays a Little East Conference make-up game Friday at Rhode Island College (3:00 p.m.), and wraps up the regular season Saturday with an LEC twinbill at Western Connecticut (1:00 p.m.). Salem State, 12-19 overall, concludes its regular season Saturday with a doubleheader at Mass. Maritime (12:00 p.m.).
