UMass Dartmouth takes two from PSU Baseball
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth took a pair of Little East Conference baseball games from Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon, winning the first game, 5-3, and taking the nightcap, 12-0.
It was the LEC opener for both schools, as UMD improves to 8-7 overall and the Panthers drop to 1-11.
Both teams got strong pitching in the opener, as senior Kyle Darrow (Marlboro, Mass.) went the distance for UMD and senior Josh Forest (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) worked seven innings for the Panthers. The Corsairs pulled ahead 4-2 on a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by junior Doug Hittinger (Middleton, Mass.). The teams exchanged runs in the eighth before Darrow held off the Panthers in the ninth inning.
Sophomore Scott Begalle (Rumney, N.H.) led the PSU offense in the opener, going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and an RBI. Sophomore Adam Kobeski (Walpole, N.H.) also collected three hits and two RBI.
Begalle added two more hits in the nightcap, but the Panthers managed only four hits in the game and were blanked for the third time this season. Five PSU pitchers made appearances on the mound, with freshman Jamie Aceto (Cumberland, R.I.) starting and taking the loss.
PSU is scheduled to play Saint Joseph's College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Plymouth, but have been moved to Standish, Maine at 11:00 a.m.
