BANGOR, Maine - The Plymouth State University baseball team stopped a five-game losing streak Sunday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from the University of Maine-Presque Isle in games played at Husson College.
The Panthers banged out 13 hits to take the first game in five innings, 13-1, and came back with a 7-2 verdict in the seven-inning nightcap. PSU is now 5-22 on the season, while UMPI remains winless in 22 outings.
The Panthers scored at least two runs in all five innings of the first game. Freshman Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) led the hit parade with three singles and two RBI. Senior Jay Morgan (Laconia, N.H.) and freshman Trevor Hall (New Boston, N.H.) each had two hits, including a double and three RBI apiece, and sophomore Adam Kobeski (Walpole, N.H.) and junior John Perkins (Nottingham, N.H.) each added two hits.
PSU senior lefthander Josh Forest (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) registered his first victory of the season in the opener with a complete-game, one-hit, six-strikeout effort. He pitched no-hit ball the first four innings before Josh Knoll (Limestone, Maine) led off the fifth inning for the Owls with a double and came around to score on a fielder's choice.
The visitors made the most of their six hits in the nightcap, and a four-run third inning proved to be all the offense PSU needed. Senior Nick Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) had a two-run single in the third, and freshman Joe Annese (Winchester, Mass.) followed with an RBI single. Libera and Annese each had two hits in the second game.
Freshman Jamie Aceto (Cumberland, R.I.) earned the win on the mound for the Panthers, giving up just two runs and two hits and working into the fifth inning. Perkins came on a tossed two-and-two-thirds of one-hit shutout baseball to finish off the Owls.
PSU returns home for a make-up game Wednesday against Granite State foe Dartmouth College at Panther Park (4:00 p.m.).
