UMass Dartmouth takes two from PSU Baseball


- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth scored 24 runs on 30 hits Saturday afternoon en route to sweeping a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from Plymouth State University, 14-6 and 10-6, at Panther Park.

            The Corsairs scored three runs in the first inning of the opener and added four more in the second inning before cruising to the win.  Senior Jim Peters (Taunton, Mass.) led the way with four hits in the game, including two doubles and two RBI.  Senior Rich Whitney (New Paltz, N.Y.) had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four, and junior Dan Mancini (Marlboro, Mass.) collected three hits.  Senior Jeremy Robidoux (Charleton, Mass.) and senior Chris Waymon (Wareham, Mass.) also contributed two hits apiece.

            The Panther offense registered 10 hits, including two each from junior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.), sophomores Trevor Hall (New Boston, N.H.) and Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.), and freshman John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.).

            Junior Lee Marques (Fall River, Mass.) earned the win for UMD, working six innings and allowing only three runs, one earned.

            Plymouth State took a 5-0 lead after two innings of the nightcap.  Junior Scott Begalle (Rumney, N.H.) had an RBI single in the first inning to put PSU on the board.  The Panthers rallied for four runs in the second inning, two coming home on a double by senior Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine).  Hall and senior Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) also added RBI singles, one of three hits in the game for Gabellieri.

            UMD came back, though, with three runs in the third and fourth innings, and a solo run in the fifth.  The Corsairs added three insurance runs in the eighth inning.

            Hittinger led the Corsairs in the nightcap with five RBI, smacking two-run singles in the third and eighth innings and a one-run hit in the fourth.  Whitney, Waymon, Mancini and sophomore Mike MacLean (Spencer, Mass.) each had two hits for UMD.

            PSU, 4-12 overall and 0-5 in the LEC, plays a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine (12:00 p.m.).  UMD, 7-10 overall and 2-2 in conference play, hosts Brandeis in a single game on Sunday (1:00 p.m.)
