Panther Baseball drops pair at Thomas CollegeWATERVILLE, Maine
- The Thomas College baseball team came from behind in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon, sweeping Plymouth State University, 7-6 and 4-3.
Plymouth State took a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning of the opener following sophomore Steve Campo's (Londonderry, N.H.) three-run homer. PSU extended the lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning on an RBI double by freshman John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.)
The Terriers began their comeback with three runs in the fifth inning, two coming home on a two-out double by junior Brandon Connors (Rochester, N.H.). Thomas tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Matt Pavlis (Webster, Mass.), and won in the last of the seventh on a bases-loaded single by junior Jordan McDonald (Pelham, N.H.)
Senior Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) registered two hits and an RBI for PSU in the opener, and classmate Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) had two walks, a triple and a run scored. Junior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) also had two hits for the Panthers.
The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap, courtesy of a hits batsman, two Thomas errors and a balk. After the Terriers got one back in the bottom of the third, PSU added another unearned run in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.
It would be Thomas' day, though, as the hosts rallied for three runs in the last of the fifth to take the lead for good. PSU contributed two errors to the rally, and two runs scored on sacrifice flies by senior Scott Brawn (Augusta, Maine) and Connors. Terrier pitchers Stefan Wrigley (Oakland, Maine) and Ryan Rulman (Westbrook, Maine) shut the Panthers down the rest of the way.
PSU, 4-14 overall, plays a non-conference game Wednesday at MIT (3:30 p.m.) and hosts Rivier Thursday at Panther Park (3:30 p.m.)
