- The Western Connecticut State University baseball team rolled to 21-4 and 21-8 Little East Conference victories over Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon at Westside Field.
In the opener, the Colonials scattered 16 hits with Jon Lynch (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Chris Kaplan (Stratford, Conn.) each collecting three hits. They each belted a double, which were the only extra-base hits for the Colonials. Lynch went 3-for-3 with four RBI and scored four runs.
Chris Kaplan, his younger brother, Adam Kaplan (Stratford, Conn.) and Kevin Darcy (Levittown, N.Y.) registered three RBI apiece in game one.
WestConn's Zane Honious (Wallingford, Conn.) allowed two runs, one of them earned, over six innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. He struck out six and walked four while allowing five hits. Freshman starter Ben Pietro (East Dennis, Mass.) took the loss for PSU.
In the nightcap, Plymouth State came from back from a 5-0 deficit to draw within one run, 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning. The flood gates opened on the Panthers in the bottom half of the inning as the Colonials scored 10 runs on six hits, five walks and one wild pitch. Freshman starter Ryan Lavelle (Middleboro, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Panthers.
Nick Parker (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led the Colonials with five hits, six RBI and four runs scored in the second game. He had two doubles and a triple in the nightcap. Steven Schwartz (Patterson, N.Y.) belted WestConn's only home run in the twinbill, his first career home run. DJ Mulhall (Stratford, Conn.) continued his hot bat, going 5-for-10 with five RBI in the doubleheader.
Plymouth State's Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) led the way for the Panthers (5-17, 0-7 LEC) with four hits in the two games. C. J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) went 3-for-10 with three RBI on the day.
PSU remains in Connecticut for a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at Albertus Magnus College (1:30 p.m.) WestConn hosts Albertus Magnus in a double header on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.)
