PSU Baseball drops pair at Saint Joseph’s

- The Saint Joseph's College baseball team kept rolling along Tuesday evening, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Plymouth State University, 11-4 and 8-5, at Mahaney Diamond.

The Monks have won 13 of their last 14 games to improve to 23-8 overall. PSU is headed in the opposite direction, dropping its eighth straight and falling to 5-23.

St. Joe's scored nine runs in the first two innings of the opener.  Freshman Luke Enman (Milan, N.H.) hit a three-run homer in the first inning.  Freshman Charlie Forbush (South Portland, Maine) cracked a three-run double and senior Aaron Clesak (Windham, Maine) added a two-run double to highlight the Monks' six-run second inning.

PSU got on the board with four runs in the third inning.  Seniors Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Me.) and Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) sandwiched singles around a walk by freshman John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.), and junior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) followed with a grand slam home run.  It was Rousseau's second round-tripped of the season and increased his team-leading RBI total to 23.

The Monks put the game away in the sixth on a two-run homer by senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, Maine).  Guimond finished the game with three hits for the Panthers.

After St. Joe's took the lead in the nightcap with single runs in the first and third innings, PSU rallied for three runs in the fourth.  Pogorzelski, Gabellieri and Rousseau opened the inning with three straight singles.  One out later, sophomore Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) cracked a two-run double, and the third Panther run scored on an infield out.

The Monks took the lead for good with two in the bottom of the fourth, and added one more in the fifth and three in the sixth.  PSU staged a comeback in the seventh on a two-run single by Guimond, but St. Joe's held on for the win.

PSU's home game vs. Castleton State on Wednesday has been postponed due to rain, and has been rescheduled for this Friday, Apr. 29, at 4:00 p.m. at Panther Park.  PSU's next game is Thursday at Panther Park against Salem State (3:30 p.m.)
