Panther Baseball rallies to defeat Castleton State

PLYMOUTH, N.H.

- Senior Vinny Smith (Alvord, Iowa) and sophomore Nick Jaskolka (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) collected three hits apiece, with each delivering a key RBI hit during fifth and eighth-inning rallies, and Plymouth State University went on to defeat Castleton State College, 7-6, in a non-conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Panther Park.

Trailing 6-1 halfway through the game, Plymouth State rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, and pulled out the win with three runs in the last of the eighth.  PSU won for the second straight day, improving to 7-23 overall, while Castleton State dropped below the .500 mark at 17-18 overall.

Castleton State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by senior Chad Phillips (Huntington, Vt.).  PSU got one back in the second when sophomore Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Dylan Mullin (Derry, N.H.)

The Spartans added an unearned run in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth, two coming home on a passed ball and one on an RBI single by freshman Eric Anderson (Chester, Vt.)

Smith and Jaskolka also keyed the PSU fifth-inning rally, each reaching base on a single and coming home on a double by sophomore Joe Annese (Winchester, Mass.).  Mullin then drove Annese home with an RBI single.

Senior Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) reached base on an error to start PSU's eighth-inning rally. Junior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) followed with a double, and Smith and Campo tied the game with consecutive run-scoring singles.  Jaskolka then delivered the crucial blow with an RBI double.

Freshman Chip Hale (Londonderry, N.H.), PSU's fifth pitcher of the day, picked up the win in relief, working two scoreless innings to improve to 2-3.

PSU is back in action Saturday with a Little East Conference twinbill at Southern Maine.  The games have been moved up and will now begin at 10:00 a.m.  Castleton State returns home to host Becker College in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
