PSU Baseball splits LEC doubleheader at Southern Maine

- Senior Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Me.) came home on a ninth-inning sacrifice fly by classmate Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) Saturday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a 3-2 victory over Southern Maine in Game Two, earning a split of the Little East Conference doubleheader.

The Huskies outhit the Panthers in the opener, 17-8, and ran away with a 12-7 victory.  The day's results leave PSU at 8-24 overall and 1-9 in conference play, while USM is now 20-10 overall and 5-4 in the LEC. Plymouth State has won three of its last four, all by one run.

PSU freshmen Jim VanGyzen (Foster, R.I.) and Steve Wheeler (Lancaster, N.H.) combined to shut down the Huskies the nightcap.  VanGyzen worked the first 4.1 innings, allowing only one run on four hits and no walks while striking out four.  Wheeler went the final 4.2 innings, giving up just one run on four hits and a walk while fanning six, and registered the win to improve to 4-3.

Southern Maine had taken a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings.  The first run came home on a double steal, and the second on a two-out, bases-loaded single by sophomore Pat Kinslow (Westbrook, Maine). PSU evened things up in the top of the eighth when Guimond doubled, Gabellieri added an RBI single, then stole second, and came home on a run-scoring hit by sophomore Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.).  Guimond and Gabellieri then won it for PSU in the ninth.

USM knocked four PSU pitchers around for 12 runs on 17 hits in the opener, leading 7-0 after two innings.  Sophomore Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass.) and junior Brent Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) led the onslaught with four hits apiece.

Junior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) and senior Vinny Smith (Alvord, Iowa) led the Panther offense in the opener with two hits and two RBI apiece.  Freshman Doug Urquhart (North Andover, Mass.) also had two hits for PSU.

PSU gets back into action Sunday with a non-conference twinbill at Lyndon State (12:00 p.m.)  USM plays an LEC make-up doubleheader Sunday at Keene State (12:00 p.m.)
