Plymouth State and Lyndon State split baseball twinbill
- Freshman Chip Hale (Londonderry, N.H.) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Plymouth State University to a 4-0 win in the opener, and sophomore Jesse Hersey (Durham, Maine) answered for Lyndon State College by scattering seven hits in a 1-0 victory in the nightcap as the two schools split a non-conference baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
Hale allowed only three hits and two walks in the opener (seven innings), striking out eight, to even his record at 3-3. HIs only trouble came in the fifth inning when Lyndon State loaded the bases on a Panther error, a single and a walk, but Hale struck out sophomore Mike Swan (Southington, Conn.) to end the threat.
The Panthers got the only run they'd need in the first inning when senior Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Me.) reached on an error, stole second and third, and came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Trevor Hall (New Boston, N.H.). Senior Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) added another run for PSU in the sixth inning when he doubled and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by senior Vinny Smith (Alvord, Iowa). Hall knocked in two insurance runs for the Panthers in the top of the seventh with a bases-loaded single.
Plymouth State put runners on base in every inning but the fourth in the nightcap, and loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn't push any across the plate. Freshman Ryan Lavelle (Middleboro, Mass.) was solid on the mound for the Panthers, allowing only one unearned run on two hits and four walks in six innings and striking out three, but took the loss.
The Hornets scored the only run of the game when junior Adrian Guyer (Lyndon, Vt.) singled, went to second on an infield out, stole third, and came home when Lavelle's pick-off attempt at first base went wild.
PSU, 9-25 overall, plays another non-conference road game Wednesday at New England College (3:30 p.m.) before wrapping up the regular season with five straight home games. LSC, 6-13, hosts the College of St. Joseph (Vt.) in its regular season finale on Wednesday (3:00 p.m.)
