- Plymouth State University and Rhode Island College split a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Panther Park, PSU capturing the opener, 12-11, with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, and RIC coming back to take the nightcap, 10-6.
The twinbill was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved up a day to avoid the oncoming rain. PSU has won six of its last 10 game and is now 11-27 overall and 2-10 in the LEC, while RIC is now 14-18 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
The first game was a see-saw slugfest. Trailing 6-3, PSU rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead. RIC answered with three in the top of the seventh to regain the lead, 9-7, only to see the Panthers deadlock the game at 9-9 with single runs in the seventh and eighth. The Anchormen went ahead 11-9 with two runs in the top of the ninth, but PSU pulled it out with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, the last two coming home on RIC errors.
Sophomore Trevor Hall (New Boston, N.H.) and junior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) led the Panther offense with three hits apiece. Sophomore Nick Jaskolka (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) also contributed two hits as PSU finished with 13 hits. Freshman Ryan Lavelle (Middleboro, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season for PSU with two innings of relief work.
Sophomore Tim Henault (East Greenwich, R.I.) led the Anchormen with three hits and four RBI, including a three-run homer and an RBI single. Freshman Peter Olson (North Providence, R.I.) also collected three hits for the visitors.
PSU fell behind 7-0 in the nightcap, but battled back with one run in the fourth inning and five in the fifth to pull to within one (7-6). RIC held off the Panthers and added a single run in the seventh and two insurance runs in the ninth.
Olson and senior Chris Smaldone (Johnston, R.I.) had three hits apiece to lead the Anchormen, while senior Chris Higgins (Swansea, Mass.) had a pair of doubles. Classmate Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, R.I.) started and worked six innings to earn the win for RIC.
Senior Vinny Smith (Alvord, Iowa) led the Panthers with four hits in the nightcap, while sophomore Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) had three hits and seniors Derek Guimond (Lewiston, Maine) and Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) finished with two hits apiece.
PSU is scheduled to conclude its season with an LEC mark-up doubleheader Sunday at Panther Park against UMass Boston (12:00 p.m.), weather permitting. RIC wraps up its regular season Sunday with an LEC twinbill at Western Connecticut (12:00 p.m.)
