PSU Baseball swaps pair in Florida with Wisconsin-Superior

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Plymouth State University and the University of Wisconsin Superior split a baseball doubleheader Sunday evening in the Gene Cusic Classic, with each team winning by a lop-sided score.  UWS took the opener, 8-2, on the strength of a six-run fourth inning, and PSU answered with a 14-2 victory in the nightcap, powered by a 10-run first inning.

It was all Panthers in the nightcap after the 10-run opening frame.  PSU added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and two more in the sixth, and finished the game with 14 hits.  Senior Adam Kobeski (Walpole, N.H.) led the offensive parade with three hits, including a double and three RBI.  Sophomore Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) added two hits, including a home run and three RBI, and classmate Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) contributed two hits, an RBI and three runs scored.

PSU freshman Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) allowed only three hits and two runs in four innings while striking out seven to pick up his first career win.

Sophomore Billy Tafs (Hermantown, Minn.) keyed the Yellow Jackets in the opener, getting one of his three hits in the fourth-inning rally with a two-run single.  Senior Troy Peiffer (Eau Claire, Wis.) held the Panthers to two runs over six-and-a-third innings, striking out eight.

Labossiere led the Panther offense, going 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.  Freshman Griffin Lafleur (Nantucket, Mass.) added two hits, including a triple.  Panther sophomore starter Justin Flanagan (Hingham, Mass.) allowed three runs in three-plus innings and took the loss.

The Panthers, 4-2, are back in action Tuesday in Fort Myers with a 12 noon doubleheader against Finlandia (Mich.)  UWS, 2-6, plays Monday night at 7 p.m. in Fort Myers against Saint Lawrence.
