FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State University baseball team split its third straight doubleheader on Tuesday in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, each time coming back to win the nightcap after falling in the opener.
Tuesday it was Findlandia University (Mich.) winning the first game, 10-7, and the Panthers rebounding to take the second, 16-8. The PSU bats were alive, pounding out 25 hits in the twinbill as the Panthers moved to 5-3 on the season. Finlandia is now 4-6.
PSU fell behind the Lions 10-2 in the opener before rallying for four runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh, but the deficit was too big to overcome. Junior Dylan Mullin (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) and freshman Josh Roberti (Cranston, R.I.) hit back-to-back RBI triples to highlight the sixth inning Panther rally.
Senior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) had three hits in the game, including a triple and an RBI, while Roberti added a double. Sophomore John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.) smacked a pair of doubles, and senior Adam Kobeski (Walpole, N.H.) went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
It was the Panthers with the big early lead in the nightcap, taking an 11-0 advantage in the first three innings. PSU finished with 16 runs on 11 hits, led by sophomore Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.), who had a single, a double and four runs batted in. Kobeski scored four runs after reaching base on two singles and two walks, and Rousseau contributed a two-run single.
Freshman Joe Brayton (Medfield, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season on the mound for the Panthers with two-and-one-third innings of relief.
After three doubleheaders in the past four days, PSU has Wednesday off and returns to action Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in Fort Myers with a twinbill against Southern New Hampshire University.
