PSU Baseball drops Little East twinbill to Eastern Connecticut
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team touched Plymouth State University pitchers for 26 hits and 18 runs Saturday afternoon en route to sweeping a Little East Conference doubleheader at Panther Park, 12-1 and 6-1.
Eastern Conn., four-time Division III national champion since 1982, improved to 4-1 in conference play this spring and 11-9 overall. PSU managed only two runs in the doubleheader despite collecting 19 hits and fell to 1-4 in the LEC and 6-13 overall.
PSU freshman Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) provided the only highlights for the Panthers, accounting for both runs on the afternoon. He cracked his third home run of the season in the ninth inning of the opener to prevent the shutout, and he tripled home PSU's only run in the seventh inning of the nightcap.
The Warriors touched PSU sophomore starter Chip Hale (Londonderry, N.H.) for six runs in the first two innings of the opener and never looked back in the 12-1 decision. Sophomore Zack Thomas (East Haddam, Conn.) had four hits and three RBI for the visitors in the opener, including a double. Senior Chris DeSantis (Shrewsbury, Mass.), freshman Shawn Gilblair (Windham, Conn.) and junior Matt Cooney (Arlington, Mass.) each collected two hits and two RBI, with DeSantis smacking his second home run of the season. Junior Matt Cremins (Stoughton, Mass.) earned the win for ECSU, improving to 3-1 with six innings of shutout pitching.
Eastern got off to another strong start in the nightcap, scoring five runs in the first three innings of PSU sophomore starter Jim VanGyzen (Foster, R.I.). Sophomore Marty Praisner (Lisbon, Conn.) had two hits and three RBI for the winners, including his first homer of the season, and senior Marc Garofalo (South Kingstown, R.I.) added three hits and an RBI. That made a winner out of junior Justin Davis (Lisbon, Conn.), who worked into the seventh inning and allowed only one run.
PSU is right back into action Sunday with a non-conference doubleheader at Panther Park against Lyndon State (12:00 p.m.) Eastern plays Monday at Babson (3:30 p.m.)
