PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Chip Hale (Londonderry, N.H.) allowed only five hits and one unearned run over eight innings Thursday afternoon while striking out a career-high 14, leading Plymouth State University to a 9-3 non-conference baseball victory over Rivier College at Panther Park.
Hale struck out the side in the fifth and seventh innings, and fanned two in the sixth frame. He surrendered a run-scoring double in the third inning but blanked the Raiders the rest of the way to improve his record to 3-2. Hale also got a save 24 hours earlier in PSU's 9-8 win Wednesday over MIT.
PSU got on the board with three runs with two outs in the fourth inning. Sophomore John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.) tripled and came home on a single by junior Dylan Mullin (Derry, N.H.) After freshmen Josh Roberti (Cranston, R.I.) followed with a walk, sophomore Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) smacked a two-run triple.
The Panther added three more runs in the fifth inning. Junior Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) doubled home a run and sophomore Doug Urquhart (North Andover, Mass.) and Roberti added RBI singles. Sophomore Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) cracked a two-run home run, his second of the season, in the sixth inning, and Roberti added another RBI single in the seventh.
Junior Mike Crawford (Yarmouth, Maine) drove in Rivier's first run with a third-inning double, and the other two Raider runs came home on a Panther error in the ninth inning.
PSU, 8-15 overall is right back in action Friday with a Little East Conference doubleheader at Panther Park against Western Connecticut (12:00 p.m.). The twinbill was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved up a day to avoid a potential rainout. Rivier is now 9-10.
