PSU Baseball drops non-conference game at Castleton State

CASTLETON, Vt. - Juniors Ryan Bouck (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Phil Puleo (Utica, N.Y.) each had two hits and drove in two runs Wednesday afternoon to lead Castleton State College to an 8-5 non-conference baseball victory over Plymouth State University.

The Spartans scored at least one run in the first four innings, taking a 7-3 lead and never looking back.  Castleton State evens its record at 16-16 overall, while Plymouth State drops to 11-20.

Sophomore Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) cracked his third home run of the season to give PSU the lead in the top of the first inning, but Castleton State tied it in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead for good with three runs in the second inning and one more in the third.  PSU pulled to within two with a pair in the top of the fourth, but the Spartans got them back in the bottom of the fourth and neither team scored again until the eighth.

Freshman Josh Roberti (Cranston, R.I.) highlighted the Panther offense on the day with a pair of RBI singles.  Sophomore Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) and senior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) also had two hits apiece for PSU, and junior Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) contributed an RBI single.

The Panthers used seven pitchers in the contest, with sophomore Ryan Lavelle (Middleboro, Mass.) starting and suffering his first loss of the season (2-1).

Plymouth State's non-conference game slated for Thursday at Salem State has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict, and will not be made up.  PSU returns to action Saturday at Panther Park with a Little East Conference doubleheader against Southern Maine (12:00 p.m.), followed by a non-conference twin bill Sunday at Panther Park against Thomas College (1:00 p.m.)
