Plymouth State splits baseball doubleheader with Fredonia State
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Plymouth State University picked up its first baseball victory of the season Sunday as the Panthers split a doubleheader Sunday in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic against the State University of New York College at Fredonia.
Sophomore Joe Brayton (Medfield, Mass.) tossed a four-hit shutout to lead the Panthers to a 4-0 victory in the opener. Fredonia State came back to take the nightcap, 9-4.
Sophomore Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) cracked a two-out, three-run double in the bottom of the first inning to give Brayton all the runs he would need. Brayton did the rest, striking out five to earn his first win of the season. Senior Jamie Aceto (Cumberland, R.I.) added an RBI single in the third inning.
After PSU took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the second game, Fredonia State came back with five runs in the bottom half of the frame, and then blew the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The teams combined for 21 hits, 11 by Fredonia State.
Kleponis added two more hits for the Panthers as well as an RBI. Sophomore Josh Roberti (Cranston, R.I.) also collected two hits and junior Adam White (Somersworth, N.H.) had a double and two RBI.
Junior Justin Flanagan (Hingham, Mass.) started on the mound for the Panthers and worked five innings but was saddled with the loss.
After an off day Monday, the Panthers play again Tuesday at 12 noon with a twinbill against Kalamazoo College (Mich.)
