PSU Baseball drops twinbill to Trinity College in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Trinity College pounded out 18 runs and 22 hits Thursday afternoon and swept a baseball doubleheader from Plymouth State University, 9-3 and 9-4, in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Bantams, who have been to the NCAA Division III Tournament two of the past four years and five times in the last nine seasons, improve to 7-1 this season, while PSU dips to 2-5.
Trinity scored in every inning of the first game, including a three-run third inning that put the Bantams ahead for good. Junior Thomas DiBenedetto (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the winners with three hits, including a double, and sophomore Sean Killeen (Greenfield, Mass.) added two hits and two RBI.
Freshman Jared LeClaire (Portsmouth, N.H./Winnacunnet) and senior Dylan Mullin (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) had two hits apiece for the Panthers in the opener, and senior Craig Carpenter (Holderness, N.H./Nashua H.S.) contributed an RBI double.
PSU came out strong in the nightcap, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. LeClaire, who had two hits in both games, led off with a triple scored on a double by Mullin, and junior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) brought Mullin home with an RBI single. The lead didn't last long as the Bantams put four runs on the board in the top of the second inning and never trailed again. Trinity put the game away with three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.
Freshman Kent Graham (Longmeadow, Mass.) reached base four times and scored three runs to pace the Bantams. Sophomore Colby Tucker (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) had two hits and four RBI, and freshman Jim Wood (Windham, N.H.) two hits and one RBI.
