PSU Baseball drops Little East doubleheader at Eastern Connecticut

MANSFIELD, Conn. - Perennial national powerhouse Eastern Connecticut State University tagged Plymouth State University pitchers for 26 runs and 22 hits Saturday afternoon, sweeping a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from the Panthers, 13-5 and 13-2, at the ECSU Baseball Stadium Complex.

It was the LEC opener for both schools. ECSU moves to 8-6 overall while PSU falls to 3-9.

Both teams had 12 hits in the opener, but PSU left 10 runners on base and managed only five runs. The Warriors took a 5-0 lead after three innings and had a 7-4 advantage before putting the game out of reach with three runs in both the sixth and eighth innings.

Senior Craig Carpenter (Holderness, N.H./Nashua H.S.) registered three hits for the Panthers while classmates Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) and Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) each had two hits and an RBI. Sophomore Joe Brayton (Medfield, Mass.) started and took the loss on the mound.

The Warriors jumped to a big lead in the nightcap with five runs in the bottom of the third inning, and put the game away with four runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth. The game was officially ended by the LEC mercy rule with PSU trailing 13-2 in the middle of the seventh inning.

Campo went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the nightcap for PSU. Carpenter and junior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) also had two hits and drove in a run for the Panthers. Junior Justin Flanagan (Hingham, Mass.) was the PSU starter and loser on the mound.

PSU is right back in action Sunday with a non-conference doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College in Standish, Maine, beginning at 12 noon. Eastern Conn. hosts LEC rival Western Connecticut in a conference game Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
