MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Middlebury College baseball team finally played its home-opener Wednesday afternoon and registered an 8-2 victory over Plymouth State University on Forbes Field.
Middlebury scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to pull away from Plymouth State. Freshman Alex Blair (Salem, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with two RBI to help the host Panthers even their record at 8-8, while the visiting Panthers had their three-game winning streak stopped and fell to 6-11.
Plymouth State struck first as senior Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) doubled to left in the first inning and later scored on a single up the middle by classmate Craig Carpenter (Holderness, N.H./Nashua H.S.). Sophomore Mark Shimrock (Lansdale, Pa.) answered for the home team with an RBI single in the bottom of the first and a run-scoring double in the third.
Middlebury rallied again in the fourth as Blair drove in a run with an infield single, and hits from juniors Gabe Broughton (Barrington, Ill.) and John Lanahan (Jacksonville, Fla.) plated two more. Middlebury added two in the fifth and one in the seventh to seal the 8-2 win.
Sophomore Steve Shortle (Rutland, Vt.) picked up his first win of the season, allowing two runs and five hits over six innings, while striking out four. Sophomore Joe Brayton (Medfield, Mass.) took the loss for PSU, dropping to 1-3.
Broughton and Shimrock each had two hits and two RBI for Middlebury, while Labossiere had a 2-for-4 day for Plymouth State and Carpenter went 2-for-3.
Middlebury returns to action at Bates this weekend, while Plymouth State visits UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference doubleheader on Saturday (12:00 p.m.), games that were moved to UMD due to snow in Plymouth. PSU's home game Thursday, April 12, against Rivier College, has been postponed.
