Big first inning leads PSU Baseball past Colby-Sawyer
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.) capped a five-run first inning with a two-run double and Plymouth State University went on to defeat Colby-Sawyer College, 7-3, in non-conference baseball action at Panther Park, the first home game of the season for PSU.
Junior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) collected three of PSU's eight hits and drove in two runs to aide the Panther cause. PSU, which began a stretch of seven games in five days, improves to 8-12 overall, while the Chargers fell to 9-11.
Freshman Jared LeClaire (Portsmouth, N.H./Winnacunnet) started the first-inning Panther rally, reaching on a third-strike wild pitch. After a single by senior Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) sent LeClaire to third, senior Craig Carpenter (Nashua, N.H.) put PSU on the board with a sacrifice fly and Hodge singled to bring home another run. Senior Jamie Aceto (Cumberland, R.I.) extended the Panther lead to 3-0 with an RBI single, and Pogorzelski's two-run double made it a 5-0 game.
The Chargers came right back with three runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Ben Warnick (South Deerfield, Mass.) and junior John O'Neil (Burrillville, R.I.) led off with singles, freshman Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.) followed with a two-run triple, and Hartery came home on a passed ball.
That ended up as all the scoring for the visitors, and the Panther bullpen shut down the Chargers the rest of the way. PSU used nine pitchers, each for one inning. Junior Ryan Lavelle (Middleboro, Mass.) was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless third inning.
PSU will be in Manchester, N.H. on Friday for a 1:00 p.m. Little East Conference game against Keene State College at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium, home of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Colby-Sawyer will take on Nichols College Friday in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader (2:00 p.m.), games that will be played at Plymouth State.
