Lyndon State sweeps doubleheader from PSU Baseball
LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - The Lyndon State College baseball team played its first home games of the season Monday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference make-up doubleheader from Plymouth State University, 14-5 and 8-5. The Hornets improve to 4-8 overall, while the Panthers dropped their sixth in a row and slipped to 8-18.
Lyndon State overcame a 5-1 deficit to pull out the opener, scoring six runs in the third inning and putting the game away with six more in the sixth inning. The Hornets came from behind again in the nightcap; after PSU took a 2-0 first inning lead, LSC plated one run in the second inning, two in the third and four runs in the fourth inning to complete the sweep.
Plymouth State scored all five of its runs of the first game in the second inning. Senior Jamie Aceto (Cumberland, R.I.) led off with a walk, and junior Adam White (Somersworth, N.H.) and sophomore Chris Welch (South Burlington, Vt.) followed with singles to load the bases. Freshman Jared LeClaire (Portsmouth, N.H.) delivered a two-run single, senior Dylan Mullin (Derry, N.H.) followed with a two-run triple, and Mullin came home on a sacrifice fly.
Mullin finished the opener with three hits and Welch had two singles. Welch also pitched the first five innings and was saddled with the loss.
PSU scored twice in the first inning of game two when LeClaire singled, stole second, came home on a single by Mullin, and Mullin scored on a double by senior Craig Carpenter (Nashua, N.H.). Junior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.) singled home a run in the fifth inning and classmate John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.) followed with a sacrifice fly. LeClaire finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk.
PSU plays 10 of its final 11 regular season games at home, beginning Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against Castleton State.
