PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Castleton State College scored 15 runs on 14 hits Wednesday afternoon and defeated Plymouth State University in a non-conference baseball game, 15-5, at Panther Park.
Junior Eric Anderson (Chester, Vt.) led the Spartans, knocking in three runs and reaching base four times on a single, double, triple and a walk. Freshman Travis Bass (West Hartford, Conn.), seniors Phil Puleo (Utica, N.Y.) and Ryan Bouck (Schenectady, N.Y.), and junior Chris Ragis (South Burlington, Vt.) all collected two hits apiece for the winners, with Bass, Puleo, Ragis and freshman Jon Handy (South Burlington, Vt.) driving in two runs apiece. Castleton State won its seventh straight game to improve to 18-9 overall.
The Panthers, who were playing with a limited squad as several players were attending calling hours for a former teammate who passed away last weekend, had their losing streak extended to seven games and dropped to 8-19. The highlights for PSU were provided by senior Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.), who drilled a two-run home run over the right field fence in the first inning, and classmate Craig Carpenter (Nashua, N.H.) who added a solo shot, his team-leading fourth of the season, in the fifth inning.
The Spartans scored in every inning except the sixth and eighth. After both teams scored twice in the opening frame, Castleton State pulled away with four runs in the second inning, one in the third, two in the fourth and four more in the fifth to make it a 13-3 contest.
Senior Tom Cummings (Athol, Mass.) started on the mound for the visitors and worked the first four innings, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned). Sophomore Ron Cahill (Oswego, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief after giving up one hit and one run in two innings while striking out four.
PSU's game scheduled for Thursday against Salem State has been postponed so the team may attend the funeral of former Panther Jared Barrows. The Panthers will return to action Saturday at Panther Park with a Little East Conference doubleheader against UMass Boston (12:00 p.m.)
Castleton State returns home to host Lyndon State in a doubleheader Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
